Why Dr. Feinstein has introduced Photo Medicine..
The endocrine disorders that cause abnormal hair
growth is one of my areas of interest. For some, these disorders are caused
by hormone dysregulation of the adrenal glands or ovaries. For others,
no endocrine disturbance is present, but excess hair growth (hirsutism)
could represent a familial trait or an unusual sensitivity to normal hormone
levels. The evaluation of these individuals can lead to medical therapy
that can be helpful in reducing unwanted hair growth. The therapy however,
frequently falls short of both my own and the patient’s expectations.
I am pleased to now offer a new technology that utilizes Intense Pulsed
Light (IPL), which results in permanent hair reduction. The combination
of medical therapy (where necessary) and this powerful new modality afford
much better therapeutic and cosmetic results.
In addition many men and women (without any endocrine problems) perceive
their excessive hair growth as disfiguring or simply unattractive. IPL
therapy is highly effective in these individuals in bringing about rapid
and dramatic permanent hair reduction. IPL compared to other modalities,
which are currently available for hair removal, is far less painful, more
efficient, and far more cost effective given that excessive hair growth
can be a lifelong condition.
A number of other skin conditions can also be significantly improved with
IPL. These include sun or age spots, excessive or uneven pigmentation,
freckles, Rosacea, birthmarks, spider veins, scars, stretch marks and
acne. It is also effective in stimulating collagen that reduces wrinkling
and the general appearance of the skin. This technique was recently sighted
on Oprah and reviewed in "O magazine" June 2004. The
